A Scientific Look at Neuropathy and CBD Oil

Several products derived from the cannabis plant have been proposed to have a great potential for pain, including neuropathic pain. These products include Full spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD oils, CBD tinctures and CBD gummies. Some patients with neuropathic pain point out that CBD based products are effective for them, which often stands out in the media.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a painful condition that causes pain originating in damaged nerves. It is different from pain messages that are transmitted along healthy and undamaged nerves from the tissue that is damaged, i.e. a fall, knee arthritis or a cut. Neuropathic pain is conventionally treated with the help of various drugs, unlike the pain that is caused by other types of tissue damage.

How CBD works for Neuropathy?

Clinical studies have shown that CBD, the major non-psychotropic substance in hemp that interacts with the serotonin receptor (5-HT)-1A, may have anxiolytic and analgesic effects. Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica can be considered as the two major varieties that are responsible for the medical and therapeutic applications of Cannabidiol (CBD). It reverses both allodynia and anxiety behavior in a clinical model of neuropathic pain.

Evidence from Research

Canadian researchers have identified the mechanism of action of cannabidiol (CBD) for the relief of chronic neuropathic pain. Studies are based on its effects on the neuronal activity of serotonin and its impact on neuropathic pain models.

The CBD was studied here for its use in chronic neuropathic pain and the anxiety associated with this condition. The mechanism of this anxiety may be related to reduced serotonergic activity, which could be modified by CBD.

CBD Mode of action on Neuropathy

Research has indicated that although CB1 receptors are not affected by CBD, the substance can regulate the serotonin transmission by activating various receptors that are involved in anxiety (5-HT1A) and in pain (TRPV1).

Seven days of CBD usage can reduce mechanical allodynia, decreased anxious behavior, and normalized 5-HT activity. In a neuropathic pain model, a 7-day CBD regime could reduce pain symptoms, but also normalize serotonergic activity and reduce anxiety behavior. This reinforces the complexity of CBD pharmacology, and scientists argue that the reduction in pain was due to TRPV1 receptors, but also that the reduction in anxiety was due to the desensitization of the serotonin 5-HT1A receptor. Therefore, CBD appears to have been effective due to its activity on the serotonin receptor.

Recommended dose for Neuropathic pain

We extrapolated the exact dosage of CBD that can effectively indicate anxiolytic and analgesic properties without any dependency or the psycho-activity that is usually caused by THC.

CBD provides an anti-inflammatory effect that will be useful as well. The use of CBD can help with pain the best if used with other cannabinoids in a full-spectrum CBD oil product if the patient tolerates it well. We can also use only CBD initially (60 mg daily, divided into 3 doses), and then study the need to combine other cannabinoids for pain control.

We recommend using CBD in a full-spectrum CBD oil product for the alleviation of peripheral neuropathy. Our store offers the best ones out there. In this way, you can achieve the highest analgesic potency. The analgesic effect may not be as strong if CBD (Cannabidiol) is used without the entourage effect; however, sometimes it can be enough, depending on the intensity of the pain.

Dosage should be based on the weight of the patient, and contraindications should always be excluded, as well as possible interactions with medications already prescribed. Without the data of the prescribed drug, we can’t evaluate the interactions.

Overall, repeated use with a low dose of CBD induces analgesia primarily by activation of TRPV1, reduces anxiety by activation of the 5-HT1A receptor, and rescues impaired 5-HT neurotransmission under neuropathic pain conditions. CBD can be considered as a safer and better alternative to opioids and THC to help with various conditions of chronic pain, such as back pain, cancer, diabetic pain, sciatic neuralgia, post-traumatic pain and neuropathic pain.
