CBD- A Cannabinoid for people with Insomnia?
Always reaching out for that pill to put you to sleep? Constantly tossing your head over the pillows? Well, now is the time to toss those sleeping pills away! And try something that is natural and yet not addictive!
Things you are missing out on- the problem is common! But drugs are not the answer!
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report studied that 1 out of every 3 American adult suffers from lack of enough sleep (insomnia) and 1 out of every 4 American adults relied on drugs to go to sleep. According to Tracey Marks, MD and author of Master your Sleep, over the counter drugs for treatment for insomnia are not the best solution.
Central Nervous systems (CNS) and neurotransmitters regulate sleep and wakefulness. Therefore, all drugs that are designed to put you to sleep either affect your neural system or your CNS.
Sleep aids are designed to work either by inducing decreased neurotransmission within CNS or by stimulating excessive production of sleep hormones.
While these drugs put you to sleep; in the long-term, they tend to reduce the natural ability of the body to put itself to sleep. Drugs that enhance states of sleep also alter autonomic physiology, behavior, cognition, and effect. Most drugs are potentially addictive and create dependence.
In most people, the dependency on sleeping pills has worsened the problem. Excessive daytime drowsiness, disruptive Non-REM (deep sleep), increase in REM (light sleep) and increase in fragmented sleep cycles prevail. Over the time loss of memory and attention deficit issues; along with fatigue and mood swings is a complaint many sleep aid users reports.
Accordingly, use of over the counter pills or prescription drugs is therefore not a proactive solution.
Treating Insomnia naturally
Research shows that CBD has been effective in alleviating factors that cause insomnia. Instead of administering ‘sedative effects or drowsiness’, CBD has been found to regulate the overall functioning of the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). ECS is a neuromodulator system in the human body, which regulates many physiological functions of the CNS including mood, cognitive functions, pain reception, and appetite. CBD mimics the cannabinoids receptors (CB1 and CB2) that regulate the ECS; therefore adequate intake of CBD boosts overall functioning of ECS in the body.
According to Joseph Maroon, M.D., a neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, CBD treats conditions that disturb sleep. Stress, anxiety, and tiredness are one of the underlying causes of insomnia, today. Research shows that CBD improves mental and cognitive functions thereby improving anxiety and stress responses in individuals. The decline in stress and anxiety, induces an overall state of mental stability, thereby improving overall bodily functions.
CBD is 100 % natural and its interaction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors have found to stimulate daytime alertness, reducing daytime sleepiness and assisting in structuring and strengthening of the sleep-wake cycles. It has been proven effective in reducing REM disorder, especially in individuals suffering from neurological disorders. CBD use has also been found effective in enhancing NON-REM cycles with less sleep fragmentation.
Moreover, CBD’s non-psychoactive properties prevent you from having the unpleasant “hangover effect” which usually sleep aids deliver.
