What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease is chronic degeneration of cartilage in joints without inflammation or infection. In the joints, the cartilage breaks and disappears, which causes bone growths that interfere with the movement.
It is a quite frequently experienced issue. 85% of people over 70 are diagnosed with this disease. It is characterized by the difficulty of making movements and daily pain. Repetitive trauma (mechanical), obesity (metabolic) or menopause (hormonal) are the causes of osteoarthritis.
What is Arthritis?
The arthritis is a chronic inflammation and severe joint body without permanent cartilage damage. When it affects only one joint, this condition is known as monoarthritis. If we talk about 2 to 4 damaged joints, we call it oligoarthritis and when there are more damaged joints, we talk about polyarthritis.
These types are characterized by severe tendon pain, redness, warmth sensation, swelling, body aches, and stiffness. Its origin can be: infectious or rheumatic (rheumatoid: it is an autoimmune disease that can have several extra-articular manifestations).
Rheumatoid arthritis is the first chronic polyarthritis. It is found mainly in adults and currently there are over 60 million people affected worldwide. The mechanisms that lead to its appearance are genetic and environmental. A dysfunction in the immune system activates the cells that normally defend the body against infections and create antibodies that attack the synovial membrane, a protective tissue of the joints. This damages cartilage, muscle tendons and bones. Therefore, the areas of union between the bone end show deformations.
Medicinal CBD as a treatment for osteoarthritis
Humans have one endocannabinoid system and endogenous receptors with ligands. These receptors also react to cannabidiol or tetrahydrocannabinol (the chemical compounds found in the hemp plant, such as CBD). This interaction causes changes in the cells of various parts of the body and is essential for the body to function normally.
Several Proven Benefits of CBD
The cannabidiol (CBD) is responsible for various therapeutic properties. It can be used to treat inflammation, anxiety, nausea, seizures, or pain, among other symptoms. In this sense, the scientific community recognizes that CBD can activate cannabinoid receptors in mammals without secondary or psychoactive effects.
Recent studies have shown active participation of the Endocannabinoid System in the pathophysiology of osteoarthritis. The results reinforce the interest in cannabinoids for this disease, primarily to regulate the functions of the joints and for being an excellent analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
Another study showed preclinical evidence that the CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system were a very close receptor to CBD, and that this attenuates peripheral immune cells and modulates central pain sensitivity, particularly in the knee.
Medicinal CBD to treat Rheumatoid arthritis
A group of researchers discovered cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in synovial tissue and fluid in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. These data could be an important goal in terms of medication for the treatment of pain and inflammation.
The multiple properties of medicinal CBD make it particularly useful when treating various diseases, as long as it is used in the correct doses and with quality products.
