Researchers hope that cannabis extracts could make us more resistant to the novel and rampant corona virus.
WHAT EXACTLY IS BEING EXAMINED?
A Canadian research team at the University of Lethbridge, led by Dr. Igor Kovalchuk, is currently actively investigating whether cannabis could be a means of preventing COVID-19.
So far, the team has examined 400 different strains of cannabis. They identified 12 strains that they believed could prevent the coronavirus from infecting the body.
Cannabis sativa strains appear to be critical to the researchers’ findings. This is because they have a particularly efficient ratio of THC and CBD.
THE POTENTIAL EFFECT OF CANNABIS AGAINST THE VIRUS
How exactly the chemical compounds in cannabis could inhibit infection is still unknown to scientists. However, they believe it could be due to the supposed anti-inflammatory properties of CBD.

Kovalchuk emphasized that the results of the study would not lead to a vaccine. Nevertheless, he hopes to be able to develop another potential weapon against the virus.
HOW FAR IS THE RESEARCH?
Financing is currently a major problem. In Canada, too, the cannabis industry is currently short of funds due to the economic crisis. Because of this, researchers have difficulty conducting clinical trials.
Kovalchuk sees a lot of potential in the work of his team. There are hardly any drugs that can prevent infections as effectively as he hopes cannabis would.
However, the Alberta team is not the only one concerned with cannabis and the corona virus. Israeli scientists have also started clinical trials with CBD. They hope to prove that it can repair cells damaged by the virus.
CAUTION: SMOKING COULD INCREASE YOUR RISK!
It should be emphasized that the positive prospects of the scientists relate primarily to cannabis preparations that are intended for oral use.
While not nearly as harmful as tobacco, smoking cannabis can still cause bronchitis or pneumonia. Experts generally advise against this, since the virus could be particularly dangerous for smokers.
