CBD and Medical Conditions

What about CBD and Medical Conditions?

CBD has been and continues to be used for different reasons, primarily for its therapeutic properties.

New interest has been raised around CBD since the late twentieth century.

This is due to the isolation of its active components and the discovery of the complex endocannabinoid system. The importance of their interaction in the essential physiological functions of the organism, provides analgesia, antitumor, anti-emetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, neuroprotective and anticonvulsant properties, which places CBD as a complementary treatment of neurodegenerative pathologies. This type of pathologies includes diseases such as Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, Friedreich’s ataxia, spinal muscular atrophy, among others. Also, the metabolic, autoimmune and tumor can be effectively treated according to research.

The most important active component of the hemp plant is CBD. There are other compounds in this therapeutic group such as Delta tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), and cannabigerol.

On the one hand, THC is granted antiemetic, sedative, analgesic, and appetite stimulant effects, while CBD is attributed to neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunosuppressive, anti-nauseous, hypnotic and anxiolytic properties. On top of that, CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. Another feature of CBD is that it counteracts the psychoactivity of THC.

Therapeutic Applications

Recent advances in the knowledge of the biochemistry and pharmacology of the cannabinoid system include the development of new drugs that act to potentiate or inhibit this system as well as synthetic medications agonists and cannabinoid receptor antagonists.

It is a focus of attention mainly for its positive effects, including antiemetic, analgesic, sedative and appetite stimulant, anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory properties. Clinical research tends to be based on extracts of CBD with a known and standardized content of active ingredients, as well as the development of new routes of administration such as sublingual, transdermal, inhaled, aerosol or rectal to avoid the harmful effects of smoke on the lungs and improve the low bioavailability of oral administration of cannabinoids.

Pain: The analgesic efficacy of cannabinoids has been evaluated in the treatment of oncological pain, neuropathic pain, postoperative pain and in rheumatoid arthritis.
